Being a community of rivers with an outsized musical scene, the Chippewa Valley is practically a northern version of New Orleans, and the Weapons of Brass Destruction provides the color and joy that comes with Brass Bands.
Back in 2014, trombonist Tom Carlson started the band with cream-of-the-crop horn and percussion players: Phil Huebner on the tuba, Jason Collins on bari sax, Levi Felling and John LeBrun on the skins, Stuart Wallace and Pat Hull on trumpet, Eric Thrane on trombone and Jeff Reitz on tenor, clarinet and flute. And last but not least, Jennifer Hazen on lead vocals.
The band's musical roots are definitely from the Crescent City but at their January Mabel Tainter gig, WoBD is playing the music of Jason Collins. The band will dig into second line, rumba and mambo, but Collins' tunes will also stretch the band with grooves in multimeter and harmonies outside the dance party scene.
